Pochi passi obbligati scandiscono la vita, tra un turno e l’altro, di Stefania, infermiera all’Ospedale S. Anna di Ferrara. Siamo in piena emergenza coronavirus, la pandemia che sta mettendo in ginocchio la sanità italiana e quella mondiale. Piccoli gesti quotidiani di una vita vissuta al limite tra timori e voglia di reagire, tra paure e senso di responsabilità. Anche in casa ci sono misure necessarie da seguire per sfuggire al contagio: nessuna vicinanza, nessun contatto, per evitare la contaminazione e le rischiose conseguenze. Solo il tempo di una doccia, un pasto, un tentativo di riposo dalla stanchezza fisica, mentale ed emotiva. Il rischio burnout diventa sempre più imminente per coloro che svolgono le cosiddette professioni d’aiuto a stretto contatto con la sofferenza e la morte, e l’esaurimento emotivo porta a sintomi psicosomatici come insonnia e depressione. Senza tregua, non c'è fuga, non c'è sosta, oggi, come ieri, poche ore di stacco e si torna in ospedale, perchè il virus non aspetta, ma i pazienti si.

Few obligatory steps mark the life of Stefania, nurse at the S. Anna Hospital of Ferrara, between one shift and another. We are in full coronavirus emergency, the pandemic that is bringing Italian and world healthcare to its knees. There are necessary measures to be followed to avoid contagion. No contact, no proximity to avoid contamination and the dangerous consequences. Just the time of a shower, a meal, a little rest from physical and mental fatigue. Burnout risk becomes increasingly imminent for those who carry out the so-called helping professions in close contact with suffering and death, and emotional exhaustion leads to psychosomatic symptoms such as insomnia and depression. The virus doesn't wait. But the patients do and there is no respite, there is no escape, there is no stopping. A few hours of break, small daily gestures of a life lived on the border between fear and desire to react, between fears and sense of responsibility.
